Data Protection Act (Datenschutzgesetz)

Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzstelle)

Liechtenstein overview

Liechtenstein applies the GDPR through the EEA and supplements it with the DSG

Liechtenstein's Data Protection Act (DSG) implements the GDPR and the Law Enforcement Directive within the EEA framework. The current official consolidation is effective from 1 April 2026. The Datenschutzstelle supervises compliance.

National rules with practical impact

The DSG contains detailed rules for video surveillance of publicly accessible spaces, public-sector DPOs, sensitive-data safeguards, secondary use, research and statistics, public-interest archives, confidentiality, scoring and credit reporting. It also contains national procedural, criminal and administrative-penalty provisions.

Video surveillance must meet a specified necessity or legitimate-interest ground, be visibly disclosed, remain purpose-bound and be deleted promptly when no longer needed. Recordable surveillance must generally be notified to the Datenschutzstelle before operation. Research data must be protected with specific safeguards, anonymised when the purpose permits and kept separately from identifying features until then.

Key Liechtenstein law

Datenschutzgesetz of 4 October 2018, LR 235.1 - current consolidated version effective 1 April 2026, incorporating LGBl. 2026 No. 9.

What this means for you

Use the GDPR as the baseline and add Liechtenstein controls for notified surveillance, sensitive-data safeguards, confidentiality, research separation and anonymisation, scoring inputs and local supervisory procedure.
