Backups and restores

You can download an encrypted backup of a real client and restore it later, into the same client or another one.

Downloading a backup

1. On the Clients page, choose Backup on the client’s card.
2. Enter a password of at least 8 characters, twice.
3. Choose Download backup. You get a ZIP file encrypted with your password.

Backups are available for real clients with a subscription, including one that has ended. Every backup and restore is recorded, with who did it and when.

What a backup contains

The client’s laws and countries, every control’s tick, date, note and Not applicable reason, and its gap analyses, data inventory, risk register, DPIAs, breach register and request log. It holds control numbers, not the text of vDPO’s control library.

Restoring a backup

1. On the Clients page, choose Restore from backup.
2. Choose the backup file and enter its password.
3. Check the summary of what will be replaced, and confirm.

Restoring replaces the client’s current data with the backup’s. Anything that no longer exists, such as a control that has been retired, is skipped and listed for you.
